Care & Harvest
🌱Germination: Violas need darkness to germinate properly, so DO NOT disturb the rockwool to check on germination progress – trust the seed’s natural process!
💡Temperature: Prefers cooler temperatures (65-70°F).
✂️ Pruning: Check the roots monthly and trim any that are brown or extending past the yPod. Once flowers start to fade, remove them by pinching the stem below the base of the flower head. This helps the plant refocus its energy on producing the next wave of blooms!
🔎 Plant Health: Aphids are a common pest, but you can use our prevention tricks to keep them at bay!
🌻 Harvest: Harvest by cutting flowers at the stem when they are fully open. To display your flowers’ beauty cut-free anywhere, use the Gardyn Vase!
Quick Facts
Native to Europe, people have cultivated Violas for thousands of years. Historically, people commonly used Violas to make medicinal treatments, wine, and even perfumes. Today, violas are a favorite edible garnish to chefs and home cooks alike. Fun fact: Violas were the first flower associated with Valentine’s Day, and they are the parent species to pansy flowers!
Violas are naturally compact plants with small flowers. This variety features green leaves with multi-petal blooms in a deep velvet black color that turns to violet surrounding bright yellow centers. Violas have a subtle, sweet flavor, making them a perfect and unique edible garnish. They are a source of vitamins A and C, and contain anthocyanins.
Black Violas will add an unexpected and edgy pop of color to your Gardyn. Try these enchanting flowers as an edible garnish for any dish! Enjoy them sprinkled over fruit, salads, soups, or even desserts. Violas can also add edible beauty to any appetizer or main course, and they create a stunning presentation when pressed into soft cheeses or icing on cakes and cookies.
