Do I need to purchase the Gardyn Sprout Nursery?

The Gardyn Sprout Nursery is the customized nursery we built so Gardyners can easily sprout new plant yCubes after they have added plant food to the Gardyn system. The ventilated dome top and specially designed insert were engineered to ensure the growing medium receives just the right amount of water and humidity to facilitate germination and keep growing sprouts healthy.

Can I customize the plants included in the Starter Kit?

The Starter Kit comes pre-packaged with an assortment of plants designed to give you a positive and diverse growing experience for the start of your Gardyn journey, and is not customizable. The Starter Kit includes 30 of our most popular leafy greens, herbs, and fruiting plants, including such staples as Butterhead lettuce, Thyme, Cherry Tomatoes, and Jalapeños. Gardyners have reported their pleasant surprise at discovering new favorites that they would not have been exposed to without the Starter Kit!

Once you have activated your Gardyn and successfully paired it with your app, you can access and place your order for additional yCubes. When you activate a 30-Day Free Trial of our monthly membership, you will also immediately redeem 10 free yCubes to order. If there are any plant yCubes that came in the Starter Kit that you are not interested in growing, we recommend removing the seeds and replacing them with your own!

Can I purchase a membership with the Gardyn?

Do I have to buy the Gardyn app?

The Gardyn app is free to download! Once you have connected your Gardyn to your WiFi network, you will have the ability to read and adjust your Gardyn’s settings, including the automatic lighting and watering schedules using the app. While you do not need to purchase a membership to use the app, there are many benefits to purchasing membership. How much do the plant yCubes cost?

Gardyn members can redeem up to 10 yCubes per month for no additional cost with free shipping. Any additional yCubes past the allotted 10 are $1.99 per month, and flat rate shipping is charged for orders over 20 yCubes. Without membership, yCubes can be purchased for $4.99 each with flat rate shipping.

Where can I purchase plant yCubes?

Gardyners can purchase more plant yCubes directly through their Gardyn app once they have assembled their Gardyn and connected it to their WiFi network. If you are having difficulty connecting, reach out to Gardyn Support at support@mygardyn.com.

Where can I purchase Strawberries?

Strawberries are currently available for bulk purchase here. They are shipped as live, dormant bare root plants, and we are still looking to overcome the necessary regulatory hurdles to ship strawberries to all states. Until they are available for purchase in all states, you will not be able to purchase them in the Gardyn app as part of your membership. Where can I buy plant food for the Gardyn?

What do I get with my Gardyn membership?

Gardyn members may redeem one order of up to 10 plant yCubes per month with free shipping at no additional cost. Plant food can also be substituted for one of the 10 yCubes. Additional yCubes may be purchased at a discount for $1.99 each, and up to 20 may be purchased at a time with no added shipping cost.

Gardyn members also get access to Kelby™, the Gardyn Smart Assistant. Kelby™ will send members notifications about when to add water and plant food, as well as guidance on harvesting, plant care, and Gardyn maintenance. Gardyn members also have access to dedicated support from our team of Growing Experts, who can help to diagnose and correct any difficulties you may encounter with your home’s unique growing environment.

When does my pre-paid membership start?

Your pre-paid membership starts on your schedule! Once you have paired your Gardyn to WiFi, you can activate the membership in the Gardyn app whenever you choose by entering your Order ID found in your Gardyn Order Confirmation email. Learn more about activating your prepaid membership here.

How do I activate my pre-paid membership?

If you have purchased a prepaid 1-year or 2-year membership with your Gardyn Home, the activation code of your membership is your order number, starting with a D that you can find on your order receipt. Can I cancel my membership?

No commitment monthly memberships may be canceled at any time by contacting Gardyn Support. You can reactivate a monthly membership at any time by purchasing it in your Gardyn app. Long term memberships offer greater savings than the monthly membership, but cannot be canceled.

What membership plans are offered?

Gardyn currently offers only one membership plan. Gardyners can purchase a pre-paid 1-year or 2-year membership with their Gardyn for greater savings.

For Gardyners who do not purchase a membership with their Gardyn, there is also a no commitment monthly membership option which Gardyners can purchase at any time in their Gardyn app. The 1-year and 2-year membership options are also available to purchase through the Gardyn app.

How much does membership cost?

The no commitment monthly membership costs $39 per month. The long term memberships provide greater savings, with 1-year members saving $5 per month ($34), and 2-year members saving $10 per month ($29) over the same period of time. A long term membership may be pre-paid along with your Gardyn, and financing options are also available.

If you have not pre-paid for a Gardyn membership, after becoming a Gardyn owner, long term memberships can be purchased from the app for a bundle price of $408 for a 1-year membership and $686 for a 2-year membership. You may also purchase a monthly membership at any time for $39 per month.

Who is Kelby™ and what does she do?

Kelby™ is the Gardyn’s Smart Assistant, available through the Gardyn app as part of the membership. Kelby™ is a constantly evolving technology that provides Gardyners with hundreds of tips to hold their hand through the process of hydroponic gardening. Kelby™ will send push notifications to Gardyners whenever they need to add water or plant food, and will guide them through essential gardening steps such as harvesting, pruning, pollinating, root trimming, and cleaning your Gardyn. She can also utilize the Gardyn’s cameras and environmental data collected by the Gardyn sensors, including its temperature, humidity, and water level, to help identify and provide solutions for any issues you may encounter as you are growing. Kelby is getting smarter every day!

Can I still use the Gardyn and Gardyn App without membership?

Yes you can! Without membership you can still connect your Gardyn to the Gardyn app, adjust its automatic lighting and watering schedule, and read its temperature, humidity, and water level to help maintain your Gardyn. Without membership, you can purchase plant yCubes through the Orders section of your Gardyn app for $4.99 each.

You will miss out on the benefits of 10 yCubes per month, as well as notifications, guidance, and reminders from Kelby™ and additional support from Gardyn’s team of Growing Experts.

How do I purchase a membership?

You can purchase a long term membership along with your Gardyn with our One Year Harvest or Two Year Harvest plans. Once you become a Gardyn owner, you may also purchase a membership in your Gardyn app. Follow the steps to purchase a membership in the Gardyn app.

Is there a trial period?

Yes! After connecting your Gardyn to your WiFi network, you will have the option to opt into a 30-Day Free Trial of our monthly membership, which will allow you to immediately redeem 10 free plant yCubes. During the trial you will also get notifications from Kelby™, the Gardyn Smart Assistant. At the end of 30 days, your membership will auto-renew for $39 per month. If you wish to cancel your trial, you can do so at any time by contacting Gardyn Support.

If you choose not to opt into the monthly trial, you will still have access to Kelby™ for 30 days, but you will not be able to redeem free yCubes.

Can I pause my membership?

You can cancel and reactivate a monthly membership at any time to experience the same benefits as pausing. Long term members have the ability to pause their membership once per year for up to 60 days. Reach out to Gardyn Support to initiate a request to pause your membership.

How big is the shipping box?

Do you ship outside of the United States?

Unfortunately, at this time we only ship to the continental US as well as Hawaii and Alaska. We are in the early stages of logistics for international shipping. Stay tuned!

Can I return my Gardyn?

Yes, you have a 60-day window to try out and return your Gardyn for a refund, minus a return shipping cost and re-stocking fee. See our Return Policy for more details.

Can I offer a Gardyn to a friend? How does it work with the subscription?

Yes, absolutely. That's a marvelous present! Just enter your friend's address as the shipping address. When your friend gets their Gardyn, they will be able to create an account from the Gardyn App and activate their membership to keep receiving plants (yCubes). Save your Order ID provided in your Order Confirmation email to give to them along with their Gardyn. They will need it later to activate their pre-paid membership in the Gardyn app.

What are Gardyn Shipping and Handling Policies?

Gardyn Inc. ships currently to addresses in the continental United States, Alaska & Hawaii.
Gardyn Home device will only be sent to valid street addresses; there is no delivery to P.O. Boxes or APO/FPO addresses.
We do ship yCube refills boxes to P.O. boxes.
Delivery to Alaska & Hawaii is available for an additional fee.
Shipment to multiple locations from a single order is currently not available.
If the carrier cannot deliver the package and returns it to Gardyn, any additional cost for subsequent shipping attempts will be at the customer’s charge.

How can I manage my Gardyn shipment?

If FedEx is the carrier, you can use FedEx Delivery Manager (FDM) to request delivery services:

Schedule the delivery (available for residential addresses served by FedEx Express and FedEx Home Delivery)
Put your package on vacation hold
Hold your package at a FedEx location for pick up
Change the delivery address

To change your package’s delivery address, you can choose from 2 options:
Use your FDM account
Contact Gardyn Support to request the change for you

If a delivery option isn’t available in FDM, this may be because of the status of the package.

For example, if the shipment is already out for delivery, then the package isn’t available for a delivery appointment set up.

When do I receive my Gardyn once I have placed my order?

It depends on your location. Most shipments in contiguous United States take between 3 to 10 business days. The Gardyn ships in two boxes and may arrive separately.

What are the shipping costs for the Gardyn and plants?

The Gardyn is sent in two packages with free shipping in contiguous U.S. states. There is a shipping charge for Gardyn shipments to Hawaii and Alaska.

Gardyn members receive free shipping on one order of up to 20 yCubes per month. After that a flat rate shipping fee applies. Without membership, there is a flat rate shipping fee for yCube orders.

Why is there a shipping charge to Hawaii and Alaska?

Due to the size and weight of the Gardyn, the cost of shipping is much higher to Hawaii and Alaska. Our shipping costs are calculated directly through the shipping platform and unfortunately we do not have control over those prices. Gardyn requires extra care and handling during shipping as we are transporting LED lights and other components that are fragile. As of right now we are still working on looking at different shipping options for Alaska and Hawaii and hopefully will have a cheaper option in the future.

How can I find out about the status of my order?

Once your order is shipped and the courier has scanned the label, you will automatically receive a confirmation email with tracking information. If you would like to inquire about your Gardyn order prior to shipping, please reach out to our Customer Support team at support@mygardyn.com.

INSTALLATION

Do I need a water connection?

You do not need a water connection for the Gardyn! The Gardyn comes with a 6 gallon reservoir, which you will need to fill periodically with fresh water and plant food. If you are a member, Kelby will remind you if you need to add water.

Will the Gardyn work without WiFi?

Without WiFi, the Gardyn will run on its default settings, which include our recommended automatic lighting and watering schedule. Before pairing your Gardyn to WiFi, these are the settings your Gardyn will operate on, and your plants will do just fine with these settings!

Once you have paired your Gardyn to your WiFi network and can view your settings in the Gardyn app, you will be able to adjust your Gardyn’s automatic lighting and watering schedule to suit your lifestyle. If you like to turn your WiFi off, your Gardyn will run on its remembered settings even if it has lost connection to your network. Once your Gardyn has paired to your WiFi, you will not need to re-pair it unless you replace your router or update its settings.

How big is a Gardyn? Can it fit in a studio apartment?

The Gardyn can definitely fit in any home, regardless of size or square feet. It was designed to grow large quantities of food on a very small footprint: 2 feet wide by 1 foot deep. It is 5'4" tall. In a studio apartment, you will want to make sure you are comfortable with having lights on for 14 hours for best plant growth. You can adjust the lighting schedule to suit your lifestyle using our guide here.

What does it need to work?

The Gardyn needs access to a 110V power outlet to run on its default settings. To connect the Gardyn to the Gardyn app and use its full functionality to customize the automated schedules, you will need a 2.4 GHz WiFi network band. If your router is 5 GHz, you may be able to create a 2.4 GHz guest network. You can also purchase a TP Link Extender to make any router compatible with the Gardyn. The Gardyn App requires a phone or smart device with operating systems iOS 10 or Android 4.1 and up.

What comes with my Gardyn?

Your Gardyn will come in two boxes:

The larger box contains the Gardyn’s main components, including the columns, tank, and pump, as well as an assembly manual to help you put it together. You will also receive an assortment of 30 plants (yCubes) and plant food so that you can start growing immediately. The box contains an accessory bag with 6 pod caps to close slots that are currently not growing any plants and a silicon sleeve to easily handle your plants for harvesting.

The smaller box contains the Gardyn’s LED grow lights and attached cameras, which allow you to monitor your plants from anywhere in the Gardyn app.

What should I do if I am having trouble connecting the Gardyn to my WiFi network?

We have a helpful resource that compiles many troubleshooting issues and solutions Gardyners may run into while connecting their Gardyn to their home WiFi network. Please review this pairing guide and reach out to our Customer Support team at support@mygardyn.com if you continue to have difficulties getting connected. You can also schedule an appointment for a call if necessary, so if you are less than tech savvy, not to worry. We’re happy to help walk you through the steps!

What should I do if I am having difficulty with assembly?

Our Customer Support team is available daily except major holidays from 9-5 EST and typically responds within 24 hours. We are committed to ensuring all Gardyners are set up successfully, so please reach out us at support@mygardyn.com. While you are waiting, we recommend reviewing our Help Center for resources that may help you troubleshoot your issue.

Where should I set up my Gardyn?

Gardyn can grow anywhere in your home as long as there is a power outlet and access to your WiFi network. Two LED grow lights are included in your Gardyn, so you will not need to worry about providing sunlight. It can even grow in a basement! We recommend you choose a place that is temperate and dry (most rooms in your place should be) with limited temperature variation (65-75F). The Gardyn is designed to be against or close to a wall as the light can be bright and should not be looked at directly.

The Gardyn is specifically designed for indoor growing and as such should not be placed outdoors. A covered patio will also experience too many temperature fluctuations to ensure healthy plants.

Do I need to secure the Gardyn to the wall?

Every Gardyn comes with a wall strap to allow you to easily fasten it to the wall. The Gardyn is designed to balance even when full of heavy plants, but we recommend securing it to the wall as an additional safety precaution, particularly if you have young children or pets.

What type of phone do I need for the Gardyn App?

The Gardyn App requires a phone or smart device with operating systems iOS 10 or Android 4.1 and up.

How can I tell the pump is working and the plants are being watered?

If your irrigation system is assembled properly, the yPods which hold the plants’ roots will be full of water after running a watering cycle. The rockwool in the yCubes will also darken in color and be visibly wet. If you run a watering cycle manually, you should be able to remove a yPod to see water trickling down the columns. The sound of the water running should be a gentle, calm trickling. Gardyners find it quite soothing! If you do not see any of this, or hear a loud noise coming from your pump, please review our troubleshooting guide for watering issues. How can I tell that the Gardyn is on?

If the Gardyn is in the On position [-], you should be able to access your Gardyn’s light and water settings in the app homescreen and adjust or activate them freely. If you are not connected to WiFi, you can also short press the button on the Gardyn lid to manually turn on the lights. Please note, the Gardyn’s switch in the back does not light up, and the lights will not automatically turn on when you switch it in the On position [-].

GARDYN APP, USE & CARE

What is the purpose of the Gardyn cameras?

The two cameras on your Gardyn are for both you and Kelby to help monitor your Gardyn. They will take photos of your Gardyn every half hour, which you can review in the Live View section of your Gardyn app.

If you are a Gardyn member, Kelby will use the images from the camera to identify which plants are growing on your Gardyn and make recommendations to optimize growth and plant health! This technology is constantly evolving, so members can look forward to increasingly tailored guidance as we grow. The cameras are stationary and exclusively view the plants only. In your Gardyn app, you can view what the camera can see. See Gardyn’s privacy policy for more details here.

What can I see or control from the Gardyn app?

The Gardyn app makes it possible for you to control your Gardyn’s automatic lighting and water scheduling remotely. If you are a Gardyn member, you will also receive notifications from Kelby, the Gardyn Smart Assistant. You can view photos of your plants growing, as well as your Gardyn’s current temperature, humidity, water level, watering schedule and light intensity.

What kind of notifications will I receive on my phone?

Gardyn members receive regular growing tips and reminders from Kelby, the Gardyn Smart Assistant. These include notifications when your water level gets too low. In your app settings, you can decide what kind of messages you want to receive and whether they are sent to you through both push notifications and email. We try to limit the number of notifications you receive so they are not overwhelming to Gardyners.

Can I use tap water in the Gardyn?

Yes! In fact, tap water is better to use in the Gardyn than distilled water because contains natural pH buffers. If you are planning to use distilled water or filtered water because you have a water softener that uses salt, we recommend supplementing with Cal Mag according to its usage recommendations.

Do I need to measure my water’s pH levels?

No! We designed the Gardyn system to be as simple as possible. Our plant food is specially formulated so that you never have to worry about pH. Simply follow our plant food usage guidelines, top off the tank regularly, and refresh the water in your tank once per month and you will never have to worry about pH.

What do I do if I have excess water and plant food mixture?

Sometimes you will have extra water and plant food left over, such as if you premixed your water and plant food and still have extra after topping off the Gardyn, or if you are doing your monthly tank clean and want to dump out the old water. In both cases, you can comfortably use this excess water to water any indoor or outdoor plants. They will love it!

How much water does the tank reservoir hold?

The Gardyn’s tank can hold up to 6 gallons of water. After you have added plant food for the first time, we recommend topping off regularly with water and plant food according to our plant food usage guidelines to maintain a consistent ratio of water and nutrients in the system.

What is the system made of? Is it PVC plastic?

Definitely not PVC! The columns and base are made of food-grade, FDA-compliant ABS plastic, commonly used in medical grade equipment and children’s toys. We also do not use plastic in our packaging and even our yCubes are made of a compostable corn-based plastic. Sustainability is an important part of our company mission and impacts everything we do.

How much energy do the lights use? What is the monthly cost?

The energy draw per second for both lights operating simultaneously is 75W on average. With the suggested schedules the Gardyn is estimated to use 54kWh per month. Gardyners have reported only paying a few dollars more per month on their usual bill. Some have said they saved on their bill, because they use the Gardyn’s lights to light their home instead!

Can I disable the cameras?

Yes. In the Gardyn app settings, you are free to disable the cameras so they no longer take any photos. You can also re-enable the cameras whenever you want. Just be aware if you are a Gardyn member that the cameras are Kelby's eyes: no camera means Kelby will no longer be able to view your Gardyn and provide specific tips to support your growth.

How often do I need to clean the Gardyn?

We currently recommend refreshing your water every 30 days to maintain consistent water chemistry. It is a simple process that only takes about 10 minutes. Deep cleaning the Gardyn columns is recommended once every 6 months or as needed to prevent any harmful bacterial growth. The Gardyn’s columns are dishwasher safe. Can I adjust the lighting schedule and intensity?

Yes you can! You can easily adjust the Gardyn’s lighting schedule to suit your lifestyle. You can review our tips for updating your lighting schedule in the Gardyn app here.

Are the Gardyn’s lights full spectrum?

Yes! The Gardyn has the best quality grow lighting available in a commercial hydroponic system. The Gardyn uses full spectrum 75W LED grow lights to mimic natural sunlight across the entire PAR range, without added infra-red and ultraviolet rays that can be harmful.

When should I add plant food and how much?

When you first start your Gardyn, Kelby will prompt you to add 3 tsp of plant food on day 10. After that, you will want to add plant food whenever you add water to the tank at the rate of 1 tsp per 2 gallons of water. Review our Plant Food Usage Guidelines for more details about adding plant food.

If you have any yCubes that haven’t sprouted yet by the time Kelby tells you to add plant food, you will be directed to continue sprouting them in a tray, or the Gardyn Sprout Nursery. Once plant food is in the system, any new yCubes should be sprouted in a tray or Nursery. They can be added to the system once the sprouts have started to produce their second set of leaves or have reached 2-3 inches in height.

What happens if my WiFi goes out? Are my plants going to die?

Once you have paired your Gardyn to your home WiFi network, it will continue to operate on your chosen preset schedule, even if your WiFi goes out. Once your WiFi comes back, it will automatically reconnect to the remembered network. Your Gardyn should continue to operate normally until it is back online! If you have any difficulties getting reconnected, try our pairing guide and reach out to Customer Support at support@mygardyn.com.

If there is a power outage, are my plants going to die?

If you are experiencing a temporary outage, the most important thing to do is water your plants! They can last without the added light, but will definitely need water. You can manually water your Gardyn using our steps here.

Can I go on vacation and leave my Gardyn?

Yes! You can set your Gardyn in Vacation Mode in your app settings, which will automatically reduce the light and water schedule to slow your growth and conserve resources while you are away. Just top off your tank with water and plant food before leaving, and if you are not returning within two weeks, you should have someone come visit to add more water. Bon voyage!

How long do the LED lights last?

Our LED bulbs have an expected lifespan of 50,000 hours which equates to over 5 years of continuous use but normal patterns of 16 hours/day would yield 8.5 years. Gardyn also warrants the components and all original parts of the Gardyn other than yCubes against defects in workmanship and materials for a period of 12 months from the date of original delivery.

If any part is not working properly, what happens?

Every Gardyn comes with a one year warranty, so any damage that may happen during shipping or normal wear and tear is covered under your warranty and we will send you replacement parts at no cost to you. Simply reach out to Customer Support at support@mygardyn.com if you happen to have a broken part with photos so we can confirm the part that needs to be replaced and record this for quality assurance. We’ll get you Gardyning again in no time!

Where can I buy replacement parts for my Gardyn?

The Gardyn comes with a one year warranty, so if you happen to break anything under normal wear and tear, you can simply reach out to Customer Support for a replacement part. After your first year, or in case you want to get any extra parts for emergencies, you can purchase replacement parts from our Accessories page.

PLANTS & GROWING TIPS

How long does it take to grow plants?

Plant growth and germination times depend on the species of the plant! Lettuce for example can sprout in a matter of days and will typically reach full size around 3-4 weeks. Cherry Tomatoes on the other hand can take 60 days to start forming flowers and begin bearing fruit. Why do I need to replace plants from time to time?

Once a plant has matured you will be able to harvest it many times, but after a period of time, certain varieties will not grow anymore or may start bolting (growing into flowers), which creates a bitter flavor. We recommend sprouting new yCubes while you are harvesting, so as one plant reaches the end of its life cycle, you have another ready to take its place.

What happens if I don't use the plants that are growing?

It is going to keep growing nicely, hence no waste! Kelby (your private gardyner) will make sure the plants keeps growing healthily and may actually slow their growth if necessary to keep them fresh for longer. At some point though, some plants may become too big or bolt (grow into flowers). You may then want to replace them with new plants.

Can I use organic plant food?

Organic plant food solutions are more appropriate for soil, and are not recommended for a hydroponic system because they will produce more biofilm and can also clog your pump. The mineral-based plant food we offer will not render your plants “inorganic”, and in fact provides the same nutrients as organic plant food but in a more efficient way. How often do I need to add water?

How often you will need to add water depends on a few factors: the size of your plants, the type of plants you are growing, your humidity, and temperature. In the first 30 days while your plants are young, your plants won’t drink much water. When you have mature plants, and especially fruiting plants which drink a lot, you will need to add water at least once per week. Kelby will remind members if their tank starts to run low, but it is a good practice to regularly top off your tank with fresh water and plant food according to our usage guidelines to maintain a healthy pH balance in your system.

How do I order plants?

Go to the Orders section in the Gardyn app and order whatever varieties you like! Gardyn members can redeem 1 order of 10 plant yCubes per month with free shipping, and Kelby will remind you when your next order is ready. If you are having difficulty accessing the Orders section because your Gardyn is not connected to WiFi, please reach out to our Customer Support team for assistance at support@mygardyn.com.

How often and how many plants can I order?

Through your app, you can order all the plants (yCubes) you want from our portfolio, or even seedless yCubes to grow your own. In order to reduce the environmental impact of transportation, Gardyn membership includes one shipment per month of 10 yCubes. Members can order more at a discounted price of $1.99 each, and free shipping is included for up to 20 yCubes. Without membership, you can order as many yCubes as you like for $4.99 each plus shipping.

What is the plant food you provide made of?

The Gardyn plant food is mineral based and is formulated specifically for the Gardyn system. Here are the ingredients:

What are the yCubes™ made of?

The yCubes are made of rockwool: it is an inert mineral, made out of basalt rock. It provides a perfect medium for the seed to germinate and develop its roots. The casing that surrounds it is a corn-based plastic and is compostable in industrial composters.

What is the full list of plants that you offer?

You can find the full list of our varieties of greens, herbs, fruits, veggies and flowers here and in the plant book in your Gardyn app. We are constantly adding new varieties and will update the list as new plants become available.

How do I grow my own seeds?

There are many factors to consider when choosing plants to grow in the Gardyn, including the length of its growth cycle and the amount of space it will take up on the Gardyn. Read our recommendations for growing your own plants here.

Can I throw away a plant once I am done with it?

Yes. The plant yCubes have been especially designed to generate no pollution: the medium the plant develops out of is made of mineral rock and a corn-based plastic casing that is designed to be compostable in industrial composters.

Will you be adding more plants?

Yes! We are always expanding our yCube portfolio and are currently exploring different herbs, vegetables and fruits to add.

Is it possible to get pests?

Pest issues are less common in indoor gardening, but they can happen from time to time. Gardyn sends plant yCubes that are composed of inorganic material and seeds to eliminate the possibility of outside contamination. However, pests can still find their way inside if let in through outside doors or windows, or if they are carried in on soil-based houseplants. My plants are growing white mold. What do I do?

Luckily white mold is not a harmful variety of mold, and is commonly caused by airborne spores or ungerminated seeds, combined with environmental factors such as low airflow, high humidity, and lower temperatures. You will want to treat it to prevent it spreading to the leaves or other plants. Learn more about tips for preventing and treating mold or other fungal plant diseases safely and organically here.

My plants have dark green stuff growing on the rockwool. What is that?

That green stuff is actually algae! It occurs naturally when water and plant food access light on the surface of the rockwool. It is not harmful to you or your plants, and can even clean your air! We have steps to remediate it here.

What should I do to prevent algae and biofilm?

Algae and biofilm are both natural parts of hydroponic gardening. You can take steps to remediate algae by blocking its access to light and covering any open slots on your Gardyn with pod caps or something opaque such as aluminum foil. Biofilm occurs as a natural byproduct when plants absorb water and plant food through their roots. Check out this helpful article written by our Lead Grower called Algae or Biofilm? What are the colored dots on the yCubes for?

The colored dots are a helpful visual key to help Kelby recognize your plants before they have sprouted via the Gardyn cameras!

How often should I trim my plant’s roots?

As your plants get larger, they will begin to grow elaborate root systems. Some plants, such as Cherry Tomatoes and Tatsoi, have root systems that should be checked bi-weekly as they mature so that they do not invade the Gardyn’s watering system. Other plants do not need to be monitored as often, but it is a good practice to check your roots regularly and trim them using our recommended guidelines. If you are a member, Kelby will send you helpful reminders to trim your roots!

Do I need to pollinate my fruiting plants?

Fruiting plants grown outdoors are pollinated by the wind or bees, but since you are growing indoors, you will need to be the bee for your plant! For fruiting plants in our portfolio, we recommend using a q-tip or small paintbrush to gently swab the inside of the flowers as they appear. A successfully pollinated plant will bear fruit! How do I prune my plants?

Plants should be pruned to control their growth and maximize their access to light. This is particularly important for fruiting plants such as tomatoes and peppers. You can review our guide to pruning your fruiting plants here.

Which sprouts do I need to thin and why?

Every yCube comes with six seeds to maximize your chances of successful germination. Sometimes, more than one seed will sprout in a single yCube. It is a good practice for many types of plants to thin your sprouts to just one to two sprouts, so that your grown plants will not be competing for space in a single yCube. Fruiting plants and leafy greens should be thinned down ideally to 1 sprout per plant. We have a full list of which plants in our portfolio to thin in our thinning guide.

How do I know when to harvest my plants and how do I do it?

You can start harvesting your plants as soon as you’re feeling the urge, but there are some rules to live by to ensure that the plant continues to grow back. We have included specific harvesting instructions for each species of plant in the Plant Book in your Gardyn app. This information is also available by clicking on any plant on our What You Grow page. Always leave at least one third of the leaves behind so that the plant has the resources it needs to grow back.

Can I sprout my plant yCubes directly on the Gardyn?

When you first receive your Gardyn, you can add your yCubes directly to the Gardyn! This is because you will not be prompted to add plant food to the system until after your yCubes have sprouted. Plant food can stunt germination, so it is important to avoid introducing plant food to any yCubes with seeds that have not sprouted yet.

If you have any yCubes that haven’t sprouted yet by the time Kelby tells you to add plant food, you will be directed to continue sprouting them in a tray, or the Gardyn Sprout Nursery. Once plant food is in the system, any new yCubes should be sprouted in a tray or Nursery. They can be added to the system once the sprouts have started to produce their second set of leaves or have reached 2-3 inches in height.

What is the Gardyn Sprout Nursery? Do I need one?

The Gardyn Sprout Nursery is specifically engineered to germinate the Gardyn yCubes. It contains an insert for the yCubes to fit into that traps water below and positions the yCubes so that they receive the precise amount of water they need to sprout. Since the water is contained, Gardyners only need to fill the Nursery with water once, as any water that evaporates will be trapped by the ventilated dome top, encouraging an ideal humid environment for germinating and supporting new sprouts until they are ready for the Gardyn. While Gardyners can successfully germinate yCubes using any rimmed tray with water, there is a lot more room for user error when trying these methods. Do I need to wash the plants before eating them?

The beauty of Gardyn-grown produce is that you know the source. Since your Gardyn plants are all pesticide free and grown in your home, you can feel comfortable snacking on leaves directly from the Gardyn without washing them first!

Is there a recommended placement for plants on the Gardyn?

Gardyners who are just starting can add their yCubes wherever they like, but once your plants start growing in there are some varieties that will need more access to light than others. Fruiting plants for example should be positioned in areas where they are getting the most access to light. Herbs on the other hand do well on the perimeter of the Gardyn, since they do not need as much light to grow. Here is our recommended placement guide for your plants.

What is the ideal temperature and humidity for growing indoors with Gardyn?

Temperature and humidity work in tandem, so the lower your temperature, the lower your required humidity and vice versa. Colder temperatures are good for leafy greens, but lead to slow germination times, and warmer weather plants like Basil and Peppers will struggle. Conversely, leafy greens will have trouble with hotter temperatures, but herbs and fruiting plants will thrive. Here are some benchmarks to consider:

65 degrees - 50% humidity
70 degrees - 55% humidity
75 degrees - 60% humidity are ideal for all Gardyn plants.
80 degrees - 65% humidity

Gardyners who live in dry climates with low humidity will want to regularly mist their plants with a spray bottle or purchase a small humidifier to encourage healthy plant growth.

Why aren’t my seeds germinating?

Seed germination can be inhibited by a number of factors, including temperature, humidity, exposure to plant food, or an overly saturated growing medium. We recommend following our germination tips and ensuring you are sprouting your yCubes in a tray or the Gardyn Nursery according to our directions.

Does Gardyn replace plant yCubes that do not germinate?

Gardyn is happy to replace any yCubes from your Starter Kit that have not germinated after 28 days, which is the maximum length of time that species in the Starter Kit typically take to germinate. After your Starter Kit, we work with Gardyners directly to improve their success rate by identifying any environmental issues that could be preventing their yCubes from germinating.

What do I do if I have a slot I am not using on the Gardyn?

Depending on the size of your Gardyn family, you may want to consider not planting all 30 Starter Kit yCubes at once. If there are any slots you are not using, you can use one of the 6 pod caps that come with your Gardyn. We offer more pod caps for sale on our accessories page. The most important consideration is that the slots be closed with something opaque to prevent the development of algae and biofilm in the system.

Are there any plants that are toxic to pets?

Some Gardyn plants should not be eaten by pets, including but not limited to Cherry Tomato and Pepper leaves. If you have a curious pet and are concerned about them snacking on your Gardyn, we recommend reviewing the ASPCA Toxic and Non-toxic Plants List, and placing any plants with potential negative effects at the top of your Gardyn. You can also purchase a pet or baby gate to block off your Gardyn from unwanted attention. We also recommend preventing your pets from drinking water out of germination trays containing yCubes so that they do not ingest any fibers from the rockwool growing medium.

How soon should I use yCubes? Do they have an expiration date?

We recommend using yCubes within 60 days to maximize your chances of germination success. Any yCubes not immediately used should be stored in a cool, dry, and dark place. You can even keep them in the package they arrive in! If properly stored, yCubes can still show signs of germination for up to a year or more.

Can I grow marijuana in the Gardyn?

The Gardyn boasts the highest quality full spectrum LED grow lights available in a commercial hydroponic system, and as such are well equipped to grow cannabis. Gardyners have reported using the Gardyn to grow cannabis with excellent results. Growing cannabis isn’t legal everywhere, so check your local and state laws first. Gardyn does not condone growing cannabis in states where it is not legal.

What growing medium do you use?

We use rockwool as a growing medium because it holds water well and does not dry out when stored for prolonged periods of time. This means you do not have to worry about using your yCubes immediately upon receiving them! Rockwool is composed of natural mineral elements melted into fibers and woven together. They are not compostable in the way that peat is, but also neither are rocks! They do not contribute harmful chemicals to the environment and you can plant them in the ground without worrying about affecting the environment. Inhaling rockwool fibers is only a danger when you are handling and manipulating rockwool in large quantities. We recommend preventing your pets from drinking water out of germination trays containing yCubes so that they do not ingest any fibers. The Gardyn Sprout Nursery has a built in cover and insert to block access to this water.

When are my plant yCubes ready for the Gardyn and plant food?

Sprouts that are too young for plant food can get overwhelmed, and their leaves may burn as a result. Before exposing your sprouts to plant food, you will want to make sure that they have developed their true leaves. These are the second set of leaves that sprout after their cotyledons (baby leaves), and appear as a smaller version of what their leaves will look like as a full grown plant. Other indicators that your sprouts are ready are seeing roots come out of the bottom of the rockwool, or if your sprout has reached 2-3 inches in height.

What are these bumps on my pepper leaves?

Bumps or crystallization on pepper leaves are characteristic of edema! Edema is typically caused when moist soil content is combined with lower temperature and higher humidity air. Other sources say edema is a genetic trait and unavoidable, but luckily it’s not a disease or serious condition!
