Care & Harvest
🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warmer temperatures (70-85F).
🐝 Pollination
Peppers require pollination. Flowers develop 4-6 weeks after sprouting. Remove the first set of flower buds that grow to encourage root and foliage development. When the next flowers appear, hand-pollinate them by gently shaking the entire plant to replicate the effects of wind, or gently disturb the inside of blossoms with your finger or a small brush.
⭕ Support
We suggest using our Plant Belt to support the plant and its heavy fruit as it matures.
✂️ Pruning
These peppers require pruning. Snip away yellow or brown leaves if they appear, and trim branches to ensure the plant stays within the Gardyn’s light. Check the roots monthly and trim any that are brown or extending past the yPod.
🔎 Plant Health
Gardyn peppers are prolific producers, even if they show signs of Edema, a harmless disorder. Aphids are a common pest, but you can use our prevention and treatment tricks to keep pests at bay!
🥬 Harvest
Jalapeños can be harvested when they are firm, they will be about 3 inches long. When leaving them on the plant longer, they will continue to ripen and change color. Harvest by cutting off the plant.

What do you need to grow jalapeños inside?

Lucky for us, these pepper plants are simple to grow inside and toss into any dish. To grow jalapeños inside, here’s what you’ll need:
Temperature
Just like most hot peppers (like habaneros), jalapenos flourish under mid-summer conditions ⎯ the hottest months of the year. Naturally, pepper plants prefer a warmer (hot) temperature when grown indoors in a space with direct sunlight. Good temperatures for indoor jalapeño plants is 70-85 degrees Fahrenheit. You can maintain this temperature with a heating pad or other tools, as well as moving the plant away from air vents during the summer. These measures will ensure optimal plant growth.
Pollination
Peppers are flowering plants, meaning they need pollination. You’ll see flowers about 4-6 weeks after sprouting. Remove that first set so that the root and foliage continue to grow. Once the next set of flowers pop up, you can gently shake the entire plant to simulate wind and hand-pollinate them. Alternatively, you can gently touch the inside of the flowers with your finger or a small brush.
Support
Jalapeno peppers are quite a heavy fruit. As they grow, they need to have enough support to mature. A great option is the adjustable Gardyn Plant Belt. This easy-to-wash accessory is designed specifically for Gardyn’s system, and can support heavier plants to produce better harvests.
Container
To grow jalapeños inside, one of the first things you’ll need is the container. You can choose practically any container to start your pepper plant. The larger the container, the quicker they will germinate and the more peppers you can grow.
Useful tip: A sustainable option is to reuse plastic containers or pots you have lying around. You can convert it into a planter by poking some drainage holes in the bottom to avoid waterlogging and the risk of root rot.
Treatment
After your jalapeno plant has fully sprouted, it’s time to keep it healthy. Your jalapeños might show signs of Edema, a harmless disorder that looks like yellowish bumps or blisters on the leaves. The most common pests like insects like ladybugs and aphids, which can be combatted with Gardyn’s pest prevention tips.
How to plant jalapeños inside
- Plant your jalapeno seeds in any container with seed-starting soil;
- Keep the soil moist and warm;
- Once the seedlings sprout with 2-3 sets of leaves, replant them;
- Gently move your plants into a 1-gallon pot;
- Use good potting mix soil and place it in a location with full sun.
How to care for your jalapeno plants
After about 10-28 days, your jalapeño seedlings should be sprouted! Now it’s time to properly care for the produce and make sure it can grow to its full potential. Peppers are a pretty hardy plant, so it only takes a few steps to look after them:
STEP 1: Watering
When growing jalapeños inside, it’s best to use damp soil. It’s advised to water once every 1-2 days, depending on outside factors like heat and humidity. To know if your jalapeño plant needs water, you can check the top inch of the soil. If the top inch is dry, it needs to be watered. If the water is leaking out of the pot’s drainage holes, you’ve watered enough.
STEP 2: Fertilizing
Your jalapeños don’t need fertilizer, but it can’t hurt! In the warmer months, you can fertilize them every 3-4 weeks by dissolving fertilizer in water. This will help your pepper plants stay healthy and continue to flourish.
STEP 3: Pruning
To prune your peppers, snip away any yellow or brown leaves. Trim any branches that stray outside your light system. The roots should be checked regularly, ideally once a month, and should be trimmed if they’re extending past the container.
STEP 4: A Simpler Solution
We’re happy to help you with the steps to grow jalapeños inside, whether you’re starting from seed or with a seedling. However, the easiest and most efficient way to grow jalapeños is with the Gardyn Home Kit system. Watering, lighting, nutrition…you name it. Harvesting and using your homegrown jalapeños

Jalapeño peppers can be harvested once they feel firm and turn a dark green color. You can also wait until they turn a bit reddish, which will give it more of a sweet and milder flavor. After you grow your jalapeños inside, they couldn’t be easier to harvest! They typically take about 60-80 days to mature, after which you can simply snip them off the plant.
Jalapeño peppers can add a little spice and seasoning to any dish. You can use your peppers for drinks, sides, pickling, or as an appetizer all on its own (jalapeño poppers, anyone?).
For a unique and crowd-pleasing recipe, try a sweet jalapeño hummus. You just need jalapeños, garbanzo beans, tahini, and whatever spices and seasonings you’d like to add. Use some honey and lemon juice for added sweetness and acidity, then blend all together. Serve with your favorite chips and you have a delicious side dish!
