Gardyn partners with Truemed to make fresh food more accessible with HSA/FSA savings

Gardyn was built on a simple conviction: everyone deserves access to fresh, nutrient-dense food. Today, we are making that vision more accessible than ever.

We are proud to announce our official partnership with Truemed, a payment and compliance platform that enables health-conscious consumers to purchase wellness products using tax-advantaged accounts. Beginning March 18, 2026, Gardyn customers can use their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) funds to purchase Gardyn systems and accessories, which unlocks an effective savings of approximately 30% on every order.

Introducing our partnership with Truemed

Millions of Americans contribute to HSA and FSA accounts each year, yet many let those dollars sit unused or scramble to spend expiring FSA balances before the calendar resets. These accounts exist specifically to fund health and wellness; growing fresh food at home is exactly that.

Truemed is a payment and compliance platform that connects health-conscious consumers with products they can purchase using tax-advantaged funds. The company handles all required documentation and ensures every transaction remains fully compliant with IRS guidelines. We selected Truemed as our partner because their approach eliminates the friction that has historically made HSA and FSA purchasing unnecessarily complicated.

This partnership reflects a broader shift in how consumers and institutions are beginning to recognize food as medicine. Indoor hydroponic growing is not a novelty, but a verifiable tool for supporting better nutrition, reducing dependence on industrial supply chains, and making meaningful choices about what goes into your body every day.

What pre-tax savings actually means for you

When you spend HSA or FSA funds, you are using dollars that were never subject to income tax. Depending on your federal and state tax bracket, that distinction typically translates to an effective discount of approximately 30% compared to purchasing with post-tax income. For a full overview of how these accounts work, see IRS Publication 969, which covers HSA and FSA eligibility requirements, contribution limits, and qualified expense rules.

That savings is immediate and unconditional. Unlike promotional pricing tied to specific windows or inventory cycles, the HSA/FSA discount is available any day of the year, for as long as you have funds available in your account.

Instead of waiting for a seasonal sale, you can leverage your own pre-tax dollars to secure a meaningful discount any day of the year.

If you have FSA funds, it is also worth noting that these balances typically expire at the end of the calendar year. A Gardyn system represents a durable, long-term investment in your household’s health, precisely the kind of purchase these accounts were designed to support.

How to use your HSA or FSA funds at checkout

We designed this process to be straightforward. There is no paperwork to mail, no reimbursement forms to track down, and no waiting period for approval. Here is how it works:

  1. Shop as normal. Browse the Gardyn website and add your preferred system or accessories to your cart.
  2. Select Truemed at checkout. When you are ready to pay, choose the Truemed option.
  3. Complete a brief intake survey. Truemed guides you through a short, secure questionnaire to verify eligibility and connect your purchase to your specific health needs.
  4. Pay with your HSA or FSA card. If approved, enter your debit card details to complete the purchase.
  5. Receive full documentation. Truemed provides all necessary receipts and records to ensure your purchase is fully compliant with tax regulations.

The health case for growing your own food

HSA and FSA accounts are built around the premise that certain purchases directly support your health. Growing fresh produce at home meets that standard in concrete, measurable ways.

Nutrient density at point of harvest

Produce begins losing nutritional value the moment it is harvested. Vegetables transported across hundreds or thousands of miles arrive in homes and grocery stores with a fraction of the vitamins they contained at peak freshness. Research from the University of California, Davis, and others has documented measurable losses in key nutrients including vitamin C, folate, and antioxidants during post-harvest storage and transit.

With Gardyn, you harvest at the moment of your choosing and eat immediately. The nutritional gap between a leaf harvested from your Gardyn and one that traveled 1,500 miles is not incidental; it is significant.

Increased vegetable consumption

Proximity shapes behavior. When fresh produce is visible and accessible in your living space, research consistently shows that people eat more of it. Gardyn members regularly report harvesting greens they would not have otherwise purchased, including basil on a weeknight dinner, grabbing fresh lettuce for a quick lunch, or incorporating herbs into meals that previously required a separate grocery trip.

Mental well-being and the connection to nature

The evidence connecting contact with living plants to reduced stress and improved mood is well-established. Horticultural therapy is an active field of clinical research. Tending to a Gardyn, even briefly each morning, engages that same biological response. It is a practice, not a passive appliance.

A more sustainable food system, starting at home

The decision to grow food indoors is also an environmental one. Since launch, Gardyn users have collectively grown more than 3.5 million pounds of fresh produce, saved over 60 million gallons of water, and eliminated 1.9 million pounds of food waste. Those outcomes are the direct result of individual households making a different kind of food choice.

Our Hybriponic™ technology uses up to 95% less water than conventional soil farming. The closed-loop water system gives plants exactly what they need without runoff or waste. And because you harvest what you need, when you need it, the spoilage that accounts for a significant share of household food waste is effectively eliminated.

Put your pre-tax funds to work

Your HSA and FSA accounts are among the most underutilized health tools available to you. This partnership with Truemed is designed to change that, making it simple to direct those funds toward something that improves your life every single day.

A few practical steps to get started:

  • Check your balance. Log into your HSA or FSA portal to confirm what funds are currently available.
  • Choose your system. Gardyn Home holds up to 30 plants. Gardyn Studio is designed for smaller spaces. Both are fully compatible with Truemed checkout.
  • Act before FSA deadlines. If your account carries a use-it-or-lose-it provision, the end of year is a firm cutoff. Do not let pre-tax dollars you have already earned go unclaimed.

We believe that what you grow and eat is one of the most consequential health decisions you make. We are committed to making that decision easier, more affordable, and more impactful than ever before.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gardyn HSA/FSA eligible?

Yes! Through our partnership with Truemed, you may be eligible to pay for your Gardyn purchase with your HSA/FSA.

What are FSA and HSA accounts?

Health savings accounts (HSA) and flexible spending accounts (FSA) are programs that allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars for eligible healthcare expenses. If you’re unsure whether or not you have an HSA or FSA account, please check with your employer or insurance company.

How does using my HSA/FSA account save me money?

HSA/FSA accounts were created so individuals could use pre-tax money to pay for expenses used to treat, mitigate, or prevent a diagnosed medical condition. Because HSA/FSAs use pre-tax money, you’re getting more purchasing power for your dollars. Rather than pay taxes on income and then spend it on health items, qualified customers can use pre-tax funds to invest in their health.

An individual can contribute up to $4,150 pretax to their HSA per year, or $8,300 for a family plus an additional $1,000 if you are at least 55 years old. Individuals can contribute up to $3,200 pretax to their FSA per year, with an additional $500 in employer contributions allowed.

Are there fees associated with using Truemed’s services?

There is no cost to you, as long as you are shopping with a Truemed partner merchant – which Gardyn is!

What is a Letter of Medical Necessity, and how is this compliant?

The items in your Truemed Letter of Medical Necessity (“LMN”) are now qualified medical expenses in the same way a visit to the doctor’s office or pharmaceutical product is.

There are thousands of studies showing food and exercise is often the best medicine to prevent and reverse disease. Food, supplements, and other health purchases qualify as medical expenses if they treat or prevent an illness, and a doctor substantiates the need. Your Truemed LMN satisfies all IRS requirements to make your wellness spend fully reimbursable.

How long does it take for me to receive my Letter of Medical Necessity?

Generally it takes 2-5 hours. In some cases, Truemed’s provider team will require additional time to issue a letter of medical necessity based on the needs associated with an individual qualification survey. If you aren’t seeing your letter in your inbox, check spam, then reach out to us at [email protected] for help.

Can I use my regular credit card at checkout?

Yes. If you’d prefer to use your regular credit card, simply select that in Truemed checkout. After your purchase, Truemed will email you instructions on how to submit the receipt to your HSA/FSA administrator for reimbursement.

I don’t have an HSA/FSA. Can I still benefit from Truemed?

Unfortunately, Truemed’s services are for individuals who have HSA or FSA accounts (or plan to fund one during open enrollment). We encourage you to ask your employer about information on your HSA or FSA!
