Gardyn is a mission-driven organization. We focus every day on improving the well-being of people and our planet. Using a Gardyn to grow produce at home makes it easier for families to access abundant quantities of vegetables, fruits, and herbs harvested at their peak nutritional value. It also helps our climate by reducing dependence on factory farming, pesticide overuse, and transporting food hundred or thousands of miles from its source. And, our growers tell us their Gardyn adds a bit more flavor to their meals, beauty to their homes, and a reconnection with nature.
Helping in Times of Need We also are committed to giving back and helping people and our planet in other tangible ways. One of those commitments is Gardyn’s 1% pledge. That means each quarter we plan to donate 1% of our revenue to charities that are making a difference. Gardyn just started up in early 2020 and our first donation was made to World Central Kitchen (WCK). Founded in 2010 by Chef José Andrés, WCK uses the power of food to heal and strengthen communities through times of crisis and beyond. WCK has transformed the field of disaster response to help devastated communities recover and establish resilient food systems.
WCK is often on the ground before any other relief workers when disaster strikes. They served 3.7 million meals in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, were on the ground in California after devastating wildfires, and in Guatemala after the Fuego Volcano eruption just to name a few. More recently, WCK was on the front lines in Oakland, feeding thousands of cruise ship passengers in quarantine due to COVID-19. WCK has served over 5 million fresh meals in more than 300 communities during the pandemic to children, seniors, healthcare workers and others in need. More recently, WCK’s COVID-19 relief response has distributed nearly 25 million fresh meals in 300+ cities and towns across the country.
Food Insecurity and the Power of Food “We know that a nourishing meal in a time of crisis is so much more than a plate of food—it’s hope, it’s dignity, it’s a sign that someone cares about you and that you are not alone,” said said Maggie Leahy, Director of Donor Relations, about their relief efforts.
The Gardyn team applauds the noble mission of WCK and its tangible, on-the-ground impact. So, it seemed only fitting in a time when food insecurity has taken on new meaning for millions around the world, that World Central Kitchen be the first charity supported by Gardyn with our 1% pledge.
