If you have gone looking for AeroGarden recently and ended up somewhere you did not expect, you are not alone. The brand has changed hands, changed status, and changed web addresses several times in the past few years, and the search results have not entirely caught up.

The full timeline

2002 to 2013: an independent company

AeroGrow International was formed as a Nevada corporation in March 2002 and operated out of Boulder, Colorado. It developed and sold the AeroGarden line of countertop indoor gardens, along with seed pod kits and accessories, as an independent public company.

April 2013: Scotts takes a minority stake

Scotts Miracle-Gro made a $4.5 million equity investment and IP acquisition in AeroGrow, taking roughly a 30 percent beneficial ownership interest. The deal also gave AeroGrow a brand license to co-brand its products under the Miracle-Gro name. AeroGrow described the partnership as transformational at the time, and reported that it expected to relaunch the line as the Miracle-Gro AeroGarden that fall.

November 2016: Scotts moves to majority control

Earlier that year, in July 2016, AeroGrow finalized a series of operational agreements and a $6.0 million term loan with Scotts. Then on November 29, 2016, Scotts’ wholly owned subsidiary SMG Growing Media exercised its outstanding warrants for $8.1 million, lifting ownership from roughly 45 percent to about 80 percent on a fully diluted basis. Scotts also took three of the five seats on AeroGrow’s board. AeroGrow’s CEO called it another red letter day for the company.

February 2021: full ownership

On February 26, 2021, the merger closed and every remaining share of AeroGrow converted into the right to receive $3.00 in cash, per the final Schedule 13E-3 filed with the SEC. Total consideration was approximately $20.1 million. AeroGrow became an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Scotts Miracle-Gro. From this point forward, AeroGarden is entirely a Scotts brand.

October 2024: the wind-down announcement

In the fall of 2024 the company announced it was closing AeroGarden, effective January 1, 2025. Direct sales on aerogarden.com ended on October 7, 2024, with products continuing on Amazon through the end of the year. Warranty coverage was reduced from one year to 90 days for units purchased on or after November 1, 2024.

For owners, the practical concern was the ecosystem. Seed pods, nutrient solution, pumps, grow lights, and bowls were largely proprietary, and a shutdown raised real questions about what happens to a working unit when the parts stop being made.

Spring 2025: the relaunch

The brand did not stay closed. AeroGarden relaunched in spring 2025 with products back on sale. Coverage at the time noted the reversal caught a lot of owners by surprise, since many had already made contingency plans.

Early 2026: the move to a new web address

Sometime around the turn of 2026, Scotts consolidated its brand websites onto a single corporate domain. AeroGarden now sits within the Scotts Miracle-Gro site alongside the company’s other brands. The aerogarden.com address still works and now leads to that page. This is one company with two front doors, not two companies.

The domain changed. The ownership did not. Anything presenting itself as a separate official AeroGarden store is worth a second look.

Buy consumables from the official addresses. Proprietary pods and nutrients are the part of the system that depends on the manufacturer staying reachable.
